Uninvited Like the Clouds
Noise - SFBG Review
Much praise must be given for Willson-Piper's vocals; his warm troubadour burr is perfectly suited for the rich canopy of violins, cellos, and woodwinds which frequently surround his engaging meditations and rousing folk-rock ... "Lullaby For The Lonely"--- a gentle violin-filigreed lilt offering the wistful refrain "can't you feel yourself falling apart"--- almost makes teary-eyed solitude sound like a lovely place to be, thanks to its ravishing orchestration.

Nightjar latest, In Deep Recordings and In Deep Music Archive
The new album Nightjar received its finishing touches in mastering today.
We are just finishing up the album artwork and hope to have it in production
by the middle of next week. There should be a T shirt and a CD available
for pre order from April 1st at the church
online shop and the record will be available at Live shows 16th and
17th April in Sydney and Melbourne.
I hope to get a couple of tracks up here for preview
and a free download of one track via the Heyday website in the US. Stay
tuned for details.
I am also happy to announce that the record will be released on the In Deep Recordings Label in Australia. Also in the States in partnership with Robert Walker at Heyday.
The In Deep Music Archive My space is also up and running and is being
added to everyday. I am writing Blog reviews of records I am listening
to and will try to keep them coming, although it might be a little tricky
when travelling. Click on the pic and go and have a look. I will probably
have a different song from Nightjar to listen to on the In Deep Music
archive page.

Nightjar - The New Solo Album
Dare Mason is producing the next solo album for Marty Willson-Piper at
the VIP Lounge in Penzance. They're commenced recording ten songs including
: Lullaby for the Lonely, I Must Have Fallen, Song for Victor Jara, High
DownBelow, Feed Your Mind, A Game for Losersand The Love You Never Had.
All of these would have been heard at some time by those lucky enough
to catch anyof Marty's live solo gigs. Two brand new songs written recently
- The Sniper and No-one There. And More is Less is a song discovered recently
on an old cassette (remember those?!) If not, they were gadgets your mum
and dad used to record and listen to music on pre-cd days.
Streaming via the net was unheard of back then but with cassettes you
could stream miles and miles of tape out the car window if the music was
really bad. No need here, this album has 12 string acoustic, some bass,
some lead vocals, all the drums, accordian and whistles.... a mixture
of stripped bare acoustic songs and haunting epics,WITH a pop song or
two thrown in! This will be a keeper, so keep an eye onthese websites
for any more whispers.
Deep In The Shallows
2007 double CD set that compiles all the classic EMI singles from one of Australia's finest exports. The Church's blend of Byrds-like jangle, soaring melodies, Psychedelic dynamics and an almost Goth-like hint of darkness endeared them to the Alternative/New Wave crowd through most of the '80s and beyond. This two CD set compiles their finest moments and features some of the greatest sounds to emerge from Oz since the days of the munchkins! 33 tracks including 'Under The Milky Way', 'Almost With You', 'Reptile', 'The Unguarded Moment', 'Constant In Opal', 'Ripple', 'Already Yesterday' and many more.

The Church - Magnetic Strip Tour Europe 2007 (Plus extra Oz date)
The Church return to Europe in electric mode this April, promoting their critically acclaimed album "uninvited, like the clouds". The band will perform in places they have never appeared before, including the beautiful cities of Prague and Vienna as well as returning to Budapest where they will convene with popular Hungarian band Heaven Street Seven for all the European dates except Brighton.
After performing for the first time in Croatia, Serbia and the Czech Republic, the tour will head West towards Germany, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and the UK where they will conclude at the Carling Academy Islington in London.

The Best of the VIP Lounge Volume 1
Dare Mason, producer of Marty Willson-Piper's solo albums and The Church's "Sometime/Anywhere" cd has just released 'The Best of the VIP Lounge Volume 1'. The VIP Lounge is Dare's studio in Penzance, England and the album contains 15 tracks recorded at the studio over 2 years including a track by Noctorum, the project formed by Dare and Marty, 'Star' by Brix Smith and 'Spin' by the French band Sojo Glider. The cd showcases the diverse talents of the various artists who've recorded at the studio and Dare's production skills. On piano and vocals - the immensely talented Sophie Hutchings: Sophie H. also plays with Bluebottle Kiss and Hitchcock’s Regret and is a corner stone of the Mood Maidens sound.
On cello - the inimitable Sophie Glasson: Sophie G. is a member of the Sydney band The Starboard Cast and is sometime guest musician and session player with cinematic epic giants Decoder Ring and the perennial Big Heavy Stuff. She has recorded and performed live with The Church and toured Russia with the SBS orchestra!
On violin, mandolin and melodica - the enigmatic Amanda Brown: Amanda is a former member of The Go Betweens, as well as the mellifluous Cleopatra Wong and Love Me. She is an in-demand session player and film music composer and has also toured with the likes of REM and The Church.

The sole survivor from the Saints, who formed in Brisbane in 1975, is frontman and songwriter Chris Bailey. He has shouldered the burden of keeping Australia's punk pioneers alive since Ed Kuepper quit the band in 1978.
Erratic and volatile, Bailey is nonetheless a bona fide original, and has managed to pack this new-look Saints with large doses of expertise. Alongside bassist Caspar Wijnberg and drummer Peter Wilkinson, he has recruited guitarist Marty Willson-Piper, from Oz psychedelicists the Church and something of a solo star in his own right. November - Brix Smith Album Under Construction Down Under
Marty is so busy at the moment with The Church and solo shows in Australia that Dare Mason has flown over from Penzance in Cornwall to have Marty complete all his parts for the album started earlier this year and written a while back with Brix Smith legendary guitar player from The Fall and singer of The Adult Net.
Dare is the producer, international courier, Sometime Anywhere's producer and Marty's partner in The Noctorum project. As we were here Tim has also been brought in to play drums ... because he's ... well so good. Release dates and availability will be announced next year.

This Thursday Marty Willson-Piper will continue his series of nites in August at the Sandringham, Sydney, with a different collection of guests, including Sandrine (new Sony artist and sticky singer/songwriter) and Chuck from Ice Cream Hands.
Next week August 21st and the following August 28th will see the return of Grant Meffan (debut solo album out now on spacejunk thru mgm) and the Spooki band, featuring Tim Powles from the church, Tracey "bassey"ellis from Kneival, and David Skeet (co producer of Sandrines debut album), all of whom will accompany Marty on a few of his tunes, particularly those from the new Noctorum cd, a cool collaboration between MWP and Dare Mason -erstwhile UK producer...........be there x 3!!!!!!!!!!!!

Noctorum Released & Dorian Gray Update
From May 1st the Noctorum album "Sparks Lane" will finally be available. You can purchase it at the shop on the Church site thechurchband.com. A collaboration between me and Dare Mason (producer Sometime Anywhere) it consists of 10 songs I write the words and sing (Dare sings one) I play the guitar and bass mostly. Dare is the producer/engineer does the BV's and plays the rest of the bass and guitar. There are many other instrumentalists on the record. Also on May 7th (my birthday) there will be a Noctorum T shirt available. Questions enquires etc please contact me at marty@martywillsonpiper.net
Other news the Dorian Gray project will not be happening as the studio in Stockholm isn't finished. Never heard that one before!!! Still we hope to work together in the future. Tero Larsson the drummer has started writing reviews for Newspaper Taxi (www.newspapertaxi.net) but in Swedish. I have been given the job of translating them into English. Daniel Lanois's new album "Shine" is reviewed and translated on the site.

News from Penzance
Marty is currently in Penzance, Cornwall in the UK for a month working on two different projects. The first 2 weeks have been spent working on the second Noctorum album which is almost completed and will be mixed by Dare in the coming months. The other project is the resurrection of a project Marty started with Brix Smith from The Fall and The Adult Net fame. Having written about 15 songs almost signing to One Little Indian and finally getting swamped with other projects this project has been brought back to life with the addition of Matt Exelby and Mark Wilkin (Noctorum) on bass and drums respectively. Think Pixies meets Veruca Salt with Dare producing, Marty’s guitars and Brix’s eccentric lyrical journey.
After this, a trip to Sweden to meet with a Swedish band called Dorian Gray in order to discuss producing and playing on two or three tracks from their up and coming album on Zip Records.
We have been planning to do this project for a while unfortunately there has been a slight problem...they are still building the studio!!
This takes us to a quick visit to London to play an intimate acoustic show at the 12 Bar Club (there will also be a special shirt made for the show, 50 only) before returning to New York for a guest appearance at Southpaw in Brooklyn on 23rd April with friends

Newspaper Taxi allows musicians to say what they think without that constant frustration of many magazines where whatever the review says you are left asking who the hell reviewed this anyway? There is no policy or image to uphold .The style and genre police will be firmly tucked up in bed.

September 2002 - Church DVD and more Parallel
The Church are currently screening many hours of video footage from the recent tours (Australia's Acoustic tour in November and the World Tour - UK Europe & USA) with the view to pulling together a DVD and/or video. The concept is evolving as they explore the raw footage and no doubt will result in an interesting audio visual rarity. - More news to come.
"Parallel Universe" is a 2 CD set of material developed concurrently ( in "parallel") to "After Everything Now This ", (The Church's latest studio album, released Feb. 2002 ). With mastering complete and art all signed off on, Parallel Universe is on schedule for a November release. Tracklisting (and new titles) as follows.

CD 1 being approx 10 alternate brother/sister mixes -arrangements- remixes-outcomes (going a lot further than the Switchkicker "soft mix " on the 2001 "numbers " EP ) of the original "After Everything Now This" tracks, developed at the same time in bursts of "what if???" and post recording/mixing madness , including one new track in the same vein.
CD 2 is a collection of tracks ( 5 or 6) that are/were part of the "After Everything Now This" sessions but felt like they were for a different release, including one 12 minute "no over dubs " atmospheric jam, and will be a minimum 30 minutes duration, not just a "bonus " disc!!
August 2002 - Parallel Universe
It has just been confirmed that the sister CD to 'after everything now this' will be released November this year. Titled 'Parallel Universe' this double album will comprise of one CD of alternate mixes/ remixes/ variant outcomes of the original 'AENT' songs, plus a second disc of unreleased material recorded during the same sessions. Hopefully there will be a limited edition double vinyl release.

January 2002 - TOUR NEWS & NOCTORUM
Marty is taking to the road for the next few months on several extensive tours with The Church. This includes USA, Australian and European Church tours. [Tour Dates]
Italy Promotional Tour: Marty is just about to do a promotional tour of Italy before heading to Australia for rehearsals. He's not quite sure what it'll involve but most likely playing some tracks live on Italian radio.
Noctorum: Marty has been collaborating and writing for a new project called 'Noctorum' with Dare Mason. We should expect an album from this before the end of this year. More to follow on this soon.
January 2002 - NEWS FROM HEYDAY
While in New York City recently, Heyday president Robert Rankin Walker discussed plans with Marty Willson-Piper for a follow up to "Hanging Out In Heaven". As it turns out, Marty is currently working on new material in order to complete another CD. However, due to Marty's commitments with The Church and All About Eve, a release date for this CD won't be nailed down for quite sometime.
But Marty has recorded two songs which may be included on a rereleased version of Hanging Out In Heaven. Marty: "The two songs are from about the same time period but were never recorded. One is a kind of a tongue in cheek Viv Stanshall/Neil Innes type affair ... called The Queen In Her Jeans. The other is like a good old fashioned country song called Dressed Up As You."
Heyday is in the works of reissuing Marty's earlier hard to find recordings Art Attack and Seeing Stars CD's which will contain bonus tracks, recent live recordings and/or interviews. Marty is now back in London and about to hit the road with All About Eve.
April 6, 2001 - NEWS FROM MARTY
After Thursday's glorious feeling of spring brushed itself against New York's cheek, the threat of winter hangs over Friday like The Sword Of Damocles. If that isn't too much to take in, then,on the unpredictable coat tales of the day I will be dragged between East Village and NOHO. Nothing more certain than unpredictability. For example! The Unbearables Arts Festival recently began throughout New York with all kinds of performance palaver and the like. Check out their website for the truth. http://www.unbearablesartsfestival.org.
For those of you who have perused 'Fragments', you may remember the 'Yellow Hello' pic? The said pic, enlarged and with reversed title 'Hello Yellow' will be hung by its ears in the Mass Transit Exhibition at The Tribes Gallery 285 E3rd St. Tel 212 674 3778. The gallery will be open on this first day from 5-9pm. After that please check the times. I'm hoping to get there for the glorious opening to consider large offers of cash form bidders from around the world, or just see how it looks. It is a computer generated enlargement (which can also be reproduced from the original photo, if so desired.) In other words, YES, it is for sale. The visit may be fleeting though because later in the evening I will be singing one song as a guest at The Fez in The Time Cafe at Lafayette and Great Jones Street for the final gig of The Health and Happiness Show (see Time Out for details and write up). It's $15 and doors are 7:30pm. Many other guests are expected.
April 5, 2001 - NEWS FROM MARTY
We still wait with baited breath as the silver lining is added to the new Church LP. Tim is personally pressing each CD. No, just joking but the story is that we all like it so much that everyday there is another tweek. It's the eternal stew with the chef constantly adding that perfect pinch to make the sweetest taste ever experienced in the kingdom. Still looking for an album cover but hoping for a June release.All About Eve are also in the finishing touches stage with the follow up to Fairy Light Nights. FLN 2 will have all the other songs with some rousing versions. Andy is trying his best to have that completed for the May dates. Fingers crossed. I have recorded two songs for what I'm hoping will be the Double vinyl version of Hanging Out In Heaven. The two songs are from about the same time period but were never recorded. One is a kind of a tongue in cheek Viv Stanshall/Neil Innes type affair. Let's say The Bonzo's meet The Divine Comedy. It's called The Queen In Her Jeans. The other is like a good old fashioned country song called Dressed Up As You. I'm sure both songs are going to slot nicely into the flow of the album. They are intended to be only for the vinyl version of the album which may have a different cover and legible lyrics unlike the CD version. It is going to be a beautiful thing....all I need now is somebody to agree to it and then I'll give you a release date. Otherwise I am in New York reading,writing and typing this. Listening and looking and trying really hard to stay out of record shops so I can pay next months rent. There will be a candid conversation with me in the new addition of The All About Eve Fanzine, Ink and Second Sight. It's all about music and getting a greater percentage of people to realise how much great stuff there is out there old and new if you just bother to look. Which brings me to Napster. Get in there while you still can. I believe Napster to be a great thing and the only people who have a problem with it are those who are rich enough to know better. I believe it encourages people to seek out new music that they otherwise couldn't afford to take a chance on and in turn they will go out and buy the record. If they don't, it is the record companies fault for ruining everything in the first place by investing huge amounts of money in rubbish music and then seriously overcharging people for the end result. An arm and a leg for a bag of crap. Good thinking boys!

TOUR NEWS Marty had some special guests at yesterday's gig at Maxwell's in Hoboken, NJ. Steve Wynn (who had his own set prior to Marty's) joined in on a cover of Tom Petty's Straight Into Darkness. Peter Koppes and Tim Powles took a break from mixing the new Church album to attend. Tim played Silver Machine with Marty, Linda Pitmon and Dave DeCastro; Peter jammed with the group on Cortez the Killer.Marty's next live performances are in the U.K. with All About Eve on November 24 at The Soundhaus in Northampton, and on November 26 at the Worcester Park Club in Kingston.
